Dentures

Dentures are removable prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth and restore the appearance and function of the mouth. They are typically made of a combination of acrylic resin, metal, and sometimes porcelain. Dentures are custom-made to fit an individual’s mouth and are intended to help improve chewing, speaking, and overall facial aesthetics after tooth loss.

There are two main types of dentures

Complete Dentures (Full Dentures)

  • What they are: Complete dentures are used when all of the natural teeth in the upper or lower arch (or both) are missing. They replace a full set of teeth and are held in place by suction or a dental adhesive.
  • When they are used: They are typically recommended for individuals who have lost all their teeth due to age, gum disease, injury, or other reasons.
  • Materials: Complete dentures are often made from acrylic resin, which can be customized to closely resemble natural gum tissue and teeth. The artificial teeth are usually made of acrylic or porcelain.
  • Fit and Comfort: Complete dentures are made to fit snugly over the gums, but some initial adjustment may be needed as the gums may shrink slightly over time.

Partial Dentures

  • What they are: Partial dentures are used when only some of the natural teeth are missing. They are designed to fill in the gaps created by missing teeth and are attached to natural teeth with metal clasps or precision attachments.
  • When they are used: They are ideal for individuals who still have some healthy natural teeth remaining in the mouth.
  • Materials: The framework of partial dentures is often made of a metal alloy for durability, and the replacement teeth are typically made of acrylic or porcelain.
  • Fit and Comfort: Partial dentures are designed to fit securely in place and are supported by the remaining natural teeth, which help keep the denture stable.

Benefits of Dentures

1

Restored Function

Dentures help restore the ability to chew and speak properly, which can be affected by missing teeth.

2

Improved Appearance

They fill out the facial features and give the appearance of a full, natural smile, improving overall aesthetics.

3

Comfort and Confidence

Dentures can improve self-esteem by giving individuals the confidence to smile, talk, and eat without worry.

4

Non-invasive

Dentures are a non-invasive solution for replacing missing teeth, as they don’t require surgery (except for implant-supported dentures).
